Are you worthy?

Do you ever think that you are not worthy of ‘greatness?’ Or maybe that you are not smart enough, fast enough, or lucky enough to live out your dreams?  Well, I am here to assure you that you are not alone in feeling this way.  Personally, I’m envious of those people who never seem to doubt themselves or their capabilities.  You know the people who act as though how to gain more self confidencethey are gracing you with their presence or the best thing that ever happened to their employer.  Frankly, it’s nauseating to be around these individuals when they are enthralled in their ‘holier than thou’ state.  However, what if someone told you that you could have a significant chunk of their confidence simply by retraining your brain?

Are you born with it?

First off, I do not believe we are born with self-confidence or the surety that we can achieve whatever our hearts desire.  As a matter of fact, I think it’s our past life experiences that give rise to our current thought patterns.  In other words, if you were constantly told as a kid that you couldn’t do something or were not good enough, this has been instilled in your brain for long-term ramifications.  What happens is your mind never forgets what it was made to once believe (ex. you’re not talented enough to be cast in that show or you’re not athletic enough to play on that team).  In turn, if you are ever faced with that type of opportunity again, your mind will very quickly go into ‘protection-mode’ and flood you with self-doubt.

Mental habits

This type of thought process has been scientifically proven and is howhow to gain more self confidence mental habits are formed.  Take a minute and think about this – how many times have you wanted to do something, but your mind quickly talked you out it?  For example, maybe you noticed a job posting that really intrigued you and your heart is telling you to apply, but your mind is telling you, “don’t bother, you’re not qualified and they won’t give you a second glance.”  So most likely, you listen to your head and the job posting is passed over.  With that being said, chances are at some point in your life, you were rejected for something due to lack of skills and/or knowledge and your mind is going to protect you from that ever happening again.

What if you chose to make decisions from your heart and not your head?  Well, according to Mel Robbins (motivational speaker and writer), you have a five-second window to turn your habitual thought process around.  More specifically, she states if you start counting backwards from 5 to 1 (5-how to gain more self confidence4-3-2-1), you will trick your mind and give yourself seconds to act differently than you usually would.  Unfortunately, if you think too long about doing something, your mind will find a way to talk you out of doing it.  Furthermore, this is quite challenging for over thinkers (like myself) that want to use logic and always weigh out any pros and cons.

Having courage

So how does this have anything to do with gaining more self-confidence?how to gain more self confidence  Well, when you have the courage to quickly act on something (speak up in a meeting, apply for that job, sign up to run that 5K), you start believing in yourself and what you’re capable of doing.  As a result, your inner determination reflects in how you carry your self and how people view you as a ‘force to be reckoned with.’  Frankly, people are drawn to others expressing confidence just like a magnet attracts ferrous objects like iron.

“Just Do It”

Your mind does not have to be a ‘creature of habit.’  In fact, most decisionshow to gain more self confidence are made based on feelings and emotion rather than logic.  Therefore, your mind (if in your control) can outsmart those feelings and cause you to act differently.  The American multinational corporation, Nike, had the right idea – Just Do It.  Stop thinking and start doing and your self-confidence will overflow.

  1. I should have just did a lot of things that I wanted to do but when I would talk about something all I got was something negative about it. All I can say now is just do it and see what happens. LJ
