So it’s a new year and you want to begin your quest to become healthier and happier. The only problem with such a promising aspiration is that it can be quite overwhelming as to the easiest method of transition.  Let’s face it – come January 1st of any new year, the media bombards you with ads fordoTerra essential oils introductory kit weight loss, gym memberships, diet plan specials, etc.  Therefore, since we are a society of instant gratification, we want to ‘jump in feet first’ and tackle everything all at once in order to see quick results.

What is an essential oil?

The power of the sense of smell

For the beginner to essential oils, there are 3 basic essential oils to get you on tract:  lavender, lemon, and peppermint.

  • The first essential oil, lavender, is quite popular with aromatherapy enthusiasts and a common oil used in spa-like settings.  This all-around, fragrant oil is a key element to the relaxation process with its calming aromatic properties.  If you are feeling anxious or consumed with stress, this is a great resource to calm those nerves.  Not to mention, with its sedative qualities, it’s helpful when you’re having trouble drifting off to sleep.  In addition, lavender has antibacterial capabilities which aid in nourishing the skin, as well as treating mild acne, cleansing cuts, and quelling the pain from a burn.
    • According to doTERRA, you can use lavender oil in the following ways:
      1. “Add to shampoo to help keep hair looking thick and healthy.”
      2. “Apply one drop to the skin to soothe occasional skin irritation.”
      3. “Take one drop internally to soothe and calm the nervous system.”
      4. “Diffuse to reduce anxious feelings and to ease feelings of tension.”
      5. “Take two drops internally to reduce anxious feelings and promote a peaceful sleep.”
  • The second essential oil, lemon, comes from the peel of a lemon which has undergone a cold-pressed extraction process.  With this being said, it’s understandable why this oil would possess such enriched health benefits to its user.  Not only does it smell clean and spirited, but it also is a powerful disinfectant which can purify your home.  In addition, lemon oil carries an invigorating scent, as well as a softening effect on your thoughts.  No to mention, this oil can assist in weight loss simply by the interruption of gaining weight, breaking down body fat, and decreasing one’s appetite.  Lastly, lemon oil decreases the levels of sebum (the oily component) in the skin coming from the sebaceous glands and thus, helps to clear acne.
    • According to doTERRA, you can use lemon oil in the following ways:
      1. “Add to a spray bottle of water to clean tables, counter tops, and other surfaces.”
      2. “Incorporate into skincare routine to give complexion a refreshed, healthy-looking glow.”
      3. “Add two drops to water for a refreshing flavor and to naturally cleanse the body and aid in digestion.”
  • The third essential oil, peppermint, is a mental booster in terms of recall and the ability to stay focused and attentive.  In addition, this oil assists with sorting through logic and fine-tuning your perceptions.  Besides it’s mental faculties, peppermint oil is a way to treat irritable bowel syndrome.  As stated on eartharoma.com by the New York Times, “peppermint is thought to have the ability to relieve some gastrointestinal problems by blocking the flow of calcium into muscle cells in the intestines, which in turn reduces muscle contractions.”  Lastly, this oil is great as a natural bug repellent, to ease the burning from sunburn, to dilate nasal cavities and airways of people suffering from the common cold or a lingering cough with a mist of peppermint, and to serve as a mild painkiller to tension headaches.
    • According to doTERRA, you can use peppermint oil in the following ways:
      1. “Massage into neck and shoulders to relieve feelings of tension.”
      2. “Diffuse five drops when feeling fatigued or low on energy.”
      3. “Take two drops internally to soothe occasional upset stomach and promote digestive health.”
      4. “Place peppermint in a spray bottle and spritz around windows and doors to repel bugs naturally.”

Ultimately, converting to a healthier, happier lifestyle is a life-altering experience, but fortunately, can be obtained by starting off slowly. As with anything in life, it’s all about the choices you make and the vision you have for your life.  With that being said, there are many reputable essential oil suppliers on the market besides doTERRA and I believe in having options.  Therefore, I’ve included the links of a few other suppliers.
