Amy’s organic cheddar cheese burrito overview
Amy’s organic cheddar cheese burrito is a true organic product because for the most part, its label epitomizes the definition of organic. To recap, being organic means that the degree of food production has been unadulterated by being grown on crops free of pesticides, and artificial fertilizers, as well as from animals free of growth hormones or antibiotics.
So what’s on this infamous label?
Well let’s take a peek at the ingredients – organic pinto beans, organic whole wheat and organic wheat flour, filtered water, organic brown rice, organic tomato puree, cheddar and monterey jack cheeses (pasturized milk, culture, salt, enzymes (without animal enzymes or rennet), expeller pressed high oleic safflower and/or sunflower oil, organic onions, organic bell peppers, sea salt, organic sweet rice flour, spices, organic wheat gluten, organic garlic. contains wheat and milk
So let’s pick apart the ingredients to see just how healthy this food product is. First of all, the 2nd ingredient on the label is organic whole wheat which contains gluten. Therefore, this particular food product would not be a good choice if you’re trying to maintain a gluten-free diet. In addition, if food containing dairy is of concern, this burrito may be an issue since it contains cheddar and monterey jack cheeses.
However, this burrito gets a point in its favor since it contains an ingredient known as high oleic safflower oil. This oil is a good thing to have because it contains more of the monoUNsaturated fats (the good fats). Not to mention, a majority of the ingredients on the label (listed from highest amount to least) are identified as being organic.
Now keep in mind that this is a frozen food item and thus, requires higher sodium levels to maintain its preservation. With that being said, this burrito contains 580mg per serving which is 25% of your daily value of sodium. However, on a more positive note, if watching your cholesterol intake is the objective, this burrito contains just 10mg per serving and 3% of your daily value of cholesterol! Not to mention, it’s a good source of natural iron with 2mg per serving and 15% of your daily value.
So how does it taste???
Personally, I do find the Amy’s organic cheddar cheese burrito tasty. However, I’ve only given it a 3/5 because when you heat it up in the microwave, the tortilla tends to stick to your plate. This equates to having to scrap the outside of the burrito off your plate and thus, the burrito partially falling apart. Also, in my opinion, the burrito is much tastier if it’s covered in salsa since the ingredients by themselves can be a bit bland.
So there’s my synopsis on Amy’s organic cheddar cheese burrito!
